Tokyo memories

A colleague has plans to go Japan in March. While sharing my own experiences in Tokyo, I started thinking of what did I do while I was in Tokyo.

The thing that I remembered most fondly was not the good food, the shopping or even the onsen.

The thing I remember most was landing at an ungodly hour, and stumbling bleary eyed in the freezing early winter drizzle to the Shinjuku Gyoen holding a "stylish" transparent umbrella each.

As mundane and miserable as that might sound, I loved each and every moment of it.

It's been a year since I last updated my blog.
And so much have happened in 2010 that I feel I should share.

I traveled to China proper for the first time, it was work, but I got to see a Chinese inland city, one that was rather affluent, but still there are differences that took some getting used to. It reminded me of my Sydney trip in that I was an independent entity for 2 weeks. I checked out some Pandas and some of the temples and bought home a boatload of tea.

I went to Europe for the first time! And it was really fun, tiring but fun. I got to see a triceratops fossil up close and something of great significance happened while watching the Sun set on top of Eiffel.

I was "surprised" with an Air Ticket to Tokyo during my Birthday and I finally got to visit a fantastical Metropolis and to spend a relaxing afternoon in an Onsen.

Spent Christmas in Bangkok, shopped a lot, ate a fair bit and drank too much to be good for me.

2010 was also the year where we made a huge commitment together. Still slightly nervous, but also very excited to see it completed ASAP.

Year 2010 ended in a gathering with good friends whom we met at a party on Christmas Eve 2009. 2010 seem to have gone by in a flash, but looking back, it was a fulfilling and exciting year.

It's the second day of 2009. The beginning of the year is the time to make a new set of resolutions for the year. And to see whether we managed to fulfill our resolutions from the previous year.

What should I resolve to do this year?
I'm guessing the ones below should be good to start with.

Learn French. (basics at the very least)
Improve/maintain Japanese level.
Complete the Stanchart Marathon.

Gym more regularly.
Sleep more regular hours.
Lose some weight.

I'm not alluding to myself with the above title. The title is referring to a traumatic experience at the cinema. We were early, and it was free seating, so we settled into a nice 3 seater thinking that no one would disturb us. Regretfully that was not to be the case. almost upon the contact of my bum to my seat, there were these two guys sitting behind me going on about the above topic, blonde or blur? about one of them. One kept up with the "I'm blonde" (i.e. dumb) the other can denying, saying "No, you're just blur"

I sat there for a total of 10 seconds, before I turned to Jayna and said, " let's change seats."

If i had sat there for the whole movie, i might have turned blonde.

As a side note, Elizabeth: The Golden Age is pretty good. That woman sure can act.

I hate arguments, I hate confrontations. I'm going to be pretty broke when my credit card bill comes in for the coming month. But I'm just thankful that no one was hurt, well except for the poor car.

Sometimes it's hard to live up to people's expectation of you. They want you to be strong, to be authoritative, to be assertive, to be caring, to be thoughtful. Yet throughout my 25 years of existence, I've been anything but that.

I do not know what I want to be. What I want to do.

Bags!
Undecided between this two bags.
Think I'll take another week to think about it.

I'm lousy when it comes to making decisions. Even a simple thing like a bag can keep me occupied for ages. I love the crumpler design, but the one from manhattan looks good too, and it has plenty of compartments, which is cool. They both look big enough. But the manhattan one does not come with a shoulder pad. Meaning I'll have to pay some more if I want a shoulder pad. Plus it does look a bit plain.

The Crumpler has only a few compartments, but I think they should be enough for keys, change and wallet. It has nice a big compartment for gym stuff. Its design is pretty nice, but it does cost a lot for a simple messenger bag. However it comes with a shoulder pad. And it does have reflective tape on it. But it is getting a bit common, everyone seems to be carrying one.

They're both waterproof. So that's good.

I guess I'll have to think on it for a little while more.

Your heart beats faster and your palms start to sweat.

What if the person you're with no longer cause your heart to flutter and your palms to get wet? What do you do?

Speaking of palms, went to Sentosa for two consecutive days. Had a great time on both occasions, although the feel of both was slightly different. Saturday was less tanning and more interaction. Today's trip felt like a trip that was pure suntanning. The difference, I was out with someone who loved the Sun too. We had a great time tanning and chatting at KM8, a beach bar in Sentosa. we decided to pamper ourselves by getting deck chairs instead of lying on the sand. Honestly, that is the only way to tan.

We talked, Jayna and me. Chatted under the Sun about everything we could think of, from exes to presents, about our futures, about her birthday. It was nice, thanks J.

Saturday was fun too, but in a more guys beach outing kind of way. Where tanning was merely a distraction. Thanks guys, it was great fun too.

I no longer have sweaty palms, and I don't remember a time when it happened. I think that sweaty palm thing is just hogwash, you just know when someone is for you, no physical manifestations required.

I have a job! Finally. It's near home. I'm thinking it's a good thing, but something a friend said made me reconsider. "If you go to town, you'll be traveling away from home." Isn't that a depressing thought?

I just hope I'll be able to handle the job.
And since my workplace is so near, I'm planning to run home after work everyday.(or as often as I can). Now I'll start to look for a bag which will allow me to do that.

Someone said we're drifting apart. Honestly I feel that too. It has never been a problem that I'm doing Engineering and you're in Law, that you're bored when i talk about my work, that I'm bored when you talk about your work. It doesn't even matter that you're going to earn more than I am. (actually it does matter). Differences in opinion about religion didn't matter. (yet, it feels as though it'll matter soon). It doesn't matter that much that your parents hate me.( Although it probably should)

What am i trying to say? If I can't make it work with you, I think I'll just give up on finding the one for me.

On a brighter note, ran to kent ridge park yesterday evening. It was nice, it even has a tree top walk, however a certain Mr. J made us exit the park at Pasir Panjang road, near the PSA building, therefore extending the run for a good 15 minutes. But it felt good to run, to not think about my work, to not think about my life, to concentrate only on putting my foot correctly, listening only to my breathing. For an hour, I could just not think.

Watched Ugly Betty last night. I felt so sad for Betty when she was rejected entry to the club, when her boss told her to "Dress up" for the restaurant where they were to meet with a client.

And she did, with help from her sister.And in the end she looked even worse than she started out. And it didn't help that the bitch, Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams) put her down during a meeting in front of everyone. So much so that Betty felt she shouldn't go for the meeting because she's ugly.

She's not pretty, not in the show. But her taste in fashion could be improved. But then that's not the point of the show.

I can understand how she feels. To be ugly, fat and unwanted. But she's stronger than I am. She still loves herself. At one point in my life I hated myself. I'll keep asking myself, "Why am I so fat?" "Why isn't anything I do helping?". AND that is where all my insecurity stems from, my ugly and fat childhood. There'll be people who'll say that i wasn't ugly, just fat, but to some people, FAT is ugly.

I believe that beauty is subjective. What is attractive to me, might be repugnant to another. Some might think that I'm handsome, while others will think that I'm ugly. So, what's the point of this whole post, basically it's if you do not look good, dress good. if you look good, remember that looks might attract for the moment, but character is what will cause a person to stay by you forever.

I went for the SIA(Singapore Airlines) career talk this evening. Having only approximately 3 hours of sleep last night, I was struggling to keep awake while listening to the wonderful history, strategies and experiences of SIA.

I was disappointed to find that this career talk had nothing on Engineering careers in SIA, it was mostly managerial, administrative careers.

And then we had the cabin crew recruitment effort. There was a flight steward and stewardess doing this part. The moment the guy started to speak, I thought "This guy sounds like an emcee". And we found out later that he in fact was an emcee for some club in SIA. The stewardess? Let's just say that she lives in the present. She does not seem to understand the concept of past tense.　She related a past incident totally in the present tense.

All in all, the first part of the talk felt like a history lecture. The second part felt like a badly scripted presentation.

Damn, I don't think I'll apply to be a cabin crew anymore.

Soya Bean Milk

An incident occurred just before class started today. A friend spilled soya bean milk onto the floor. No one was hurt, except maybe her notebook, and a few unfortunate ants( who drowned ignobly). The thing that gets to me is that, except for the people who knew her as a friend, none of the other people in class offered a helping hand (except the tutor).

Something happened that made me really happy today.

That's Robin in the middle holding on to the shinai. He's the first runner up for the non-bogu division.

James, Perry, Wenlin, me, and Jiejing smiling and taking photos while every one else is concentrating on the matches.

It must have looked pretty weird to the other kendo clubs to see the NUS kendo kai juniors treating the tournament as a chance to take pictures and generally treating it as one big excursion.

Finally, my gi and hakama are here.
It was an interesting training session, with senpai telling us that we'll become smurfs at the send of training, (in other words, the dye will come off).
Learning how to wear the gi and hakama is challenge in itself.
Folding the them to put into my bag is even more of a problem.

But it does feel different wearing proper attire to kendo. You walk straighter, feel more confident, and most importantly of all, ou don't run the risk of accidently exposing yourself.

It's hotter definitely, but it's oh so much more fun.

I'm enjoying kendo so much, I'm beginning to question why I didn't join earlier.

The fact that the straits times had an article on what to do if you fall onto the MRT track. Shouldn't this have been done way way way back, when there were fatal cases? And not only when people finally realised that it's possible to survive falling onto the tracks? Weird how the media works in Singapore.

The fact that not only are there people who would torture cats, there are those who would take a video clip of themself kicking a cat. I wonder if these people get weird nightmares of giant cats kicking them and making a video clip out of it.

The fact that there are people who will starve themselves for a whole week just to lose weight, and part of the program involves having to look at people eat dinner after they've starved themselves for a whole week. Weird way to lose weight.

The fact that I'm now hooked onto a korean drama titled "Full House". Never thought I'll be hooked onto korean drama, weird. Although if anyone has the vcds/dvds of this drama, do be kind and lend me.

I couldn't understand why they had to go for breast enlargement, when they looked more than ample.
One of them turned out to look too top heavy.
Like a barbie doll, except for the waist.

I've never been a big fan of big chested women,
preferring petite, proportionate and pretty.

I know that there are guys who love well endowed women,

When I saw the "pass" next to my name this afternoon, I was at my happiest the whole week. :)

Been listening to "Scissor Sisters", they've been around for quite a while, but I've only heard of them recently, and I like them. They have an interesting sound. Right now, i might have thousands of songs in my iPod, but I'm only listening to them on my way to and from work.

Is it ethical to profess your love for someone whom you know to be attached?

On saturday, we gathered at Vicky's place and had a bit of fun doing a bit of fortune telling. It wasn't full fledged fortune telling, since we were only able to ask about our relations concerning only one person at a time.

I realised something that day, the tellings were quite accurate, but then the readings were so general that you could find a correlation if you tried.

So there.

I do not believe in horoscopes nor fortunes.

Life and love is what you make of it, even if it will take you a while to work up the courage to fight for it.

Recently a friend complained to me about how she regrets dumping her boyfriend. And as I listened, I came to the realization that I was listening to a kid complain. Because her regret surfaced only when she realized that her ex is moving on, and is starting to date once again.

From what I've heard, he is a perfectly nice guy, a tad clingy, a tad over-protective, but a nice guy nontheless. But that she decided to part ways due to issues which she felt were irresolvable. So she expressed a desire to be back with him, and I asked her, "do you feel that those issues are going to be resolvable now?" she couldn't give me any answer, just a I don't know.

From my point of view, she was being selfish. She wanted freedom, yet she wanted the guy to be there when she got tired of freedom. And now that she realises the guy might not be there anymorem she begins to regret it.

Of course, him being back in Singapore probably helped to changed her mind.

What I'm afraid of is that the guy will gladly take her back if she wants to go back, and that this might not be good for them.

I think that the both of them might not be mature enough to handle a relationship. At least not with one another.

Lazy Sunday

Lazing at home, watching tv, reading the newspaper, buying lunch home. Sounds horribly mundane, doesn't it? But yesterday, that was exactly what I did, and I never felt happier.

It makes me wonder how often will we get to do that together? When school starts, we'll once again be busy with school work, and with your church commitments on Sundays, I don't think we'll have many chances to just laze around on a Sunday.

But still, it was nice.

Since he's going alone, he asked whether I would like to go along.

I would love to, but school and being cash strapped rendered me helpless to fulfill my want.

七月、誰かシンガポールに帰る。ほんとうに楽しみにしている。いくら一週間以下いても、もう嬉しくなる。でもシンガポールにいるとき、君は忙しいかもしれないから、会う時間があまりないだと思う。それに働かなければならないから、会う時間は夜だけ。

でも、七月プレースメントテストを受けるから、心配だ。準備はまだ完了しない。

Today, my supervisor suddenly asked me whether I would like to extend my internship,to September. I'm thinking that he must be really desperate to want me to stay on his project. I'm wondering if I should. Or maybe it just means that he feels that I'm up to the job. Yah right, I wish.

On another note, someone is sick. Sad. Nothing I can do. Actually there's not much I can do even if someone is in Singapore, except accompany to the doctor's and moral support and to worry.

6 more minutes to knock off as I'm typing. Got my program up and running, running the simulations now.

Happy post? I guess so, it feels that one has been long overdue. :)

As much as i like looking at young nubike things( yes dear, I do look and I'm sorry.) I know that a certain someone is the one and only one for me.

A friend was telling me about how long distance relationship is a potential pit fall for relationships due to reasons known to all( I hope ).

At one point I was pretty worried and I got angry. I know you've forgiven me, and I'm grateful for that.

A friend(a fellow scorpio) gave me an insight into a scorpio's personailty, and I think it's quite accurate, Scorpios are a possesive bunch. So he advised me to loosen up, let her have fun, trust her, I'm trying, it ain't easy, but I'm trying.

Conversely, I realise that I'm not under a very tight rein at all, any restrictions I have are mostly due to myself, temptations abounds, and I know that I should never put myself in a situation where I might get tempted.

SOOOOO, I might like looking at young nubile things, but at the end of the day I look forward to conversing with you( when you're not acting silly ), a perfectionist, a scatter brain, a dreamer, and the love of my life.

最近ちょっと時間があまりないから、ブログを書けなかった。何をする？働いている。毎日、コンピューターを見て、プログラムをやって、目が疲れるようになる。だから、うちへ帰った後で、コンピューターを見たくなくて、ブログもやりたくない。日本語でやりたいだが、英語でやったほうが速いだろう。だからここから、英語を使う。

Been feeling kind of down recently. Got my results, My CAP went down again. Oh well, at least I didn't fail.

I think i might have over reacted a few nights back. But I just got my results, and I wasn't feeling great when you called. I was tired from work, tired from seeing my crappy result, tired of always having to wait for you to end your parties. I'm so tired. Heard the news that a friend broke up, he tried to look happy when I saw him on saturday, yet I could sense his unhappiness, his sadness. Also found out that another friend is back together with the person he broke up with. I could sense his unhappiness too. So we went to dance the night away. To try and forget our problems and our sadness.

I'm getting way too old to still be clubbing, I think it's time I stop, isn't it time for you to stop as well?

Haha, I feel so silly, I think I should start a diary soon, one where I can really write how I really feel, one where I'll read 10 years later, smiling and cringing as I do so.

I know this blog ain't it, I compose my posts with the utmost care to preserve the anomymity of the people involved, and to compose my thoughts in such a way so as not to offend people.

I wonder if I should stop? I don't see anymore meaning in blogging.

I think I'll take a break from now, until my spirits are higher, and my words cheerier, and my life interesting.
